Leave Brittney alone! Fans asking if Octagon Girl will re-emerge at UFC 133

There was a lot of big news that came out around UFC 133 this week. Zuffa is done with Golden Glory fighters and even bigger, the great Fedor Emelianenko is done with Strikeforce. But there's still a little unfinished business to tend to with regards to the Octagon Girls. Last month, it appeared fan favorite Brittney Palmer was dropped from the roster, then there was some confusion. Since then everyone's been mum on the topic.

The guys at MMAFix are dying to get an answer and tracked the tweets of Arianny Celeste, Chandella Powell and the lovely Brittney.

So? today the UFC Ring Girls flew out to Philly for UFC 133 as tweeted here by Arianny Celeste:

Great to be back 2 work! Weigh ins tommorow and shooting ultimate insider! Now ordering a movie..anyone seen Sucker Punch?

and by Chandella Powell:

Just landed! Hello Philly!!!!!;)

But when I read Brittney Palmer's tweets, things went a little different:

Had a blast today at th #USopenofsurfing with the fantastic crew from @daily_habit @FuelTV! Check it out @ 8pm tonight.. Pole dancing??

MMAFix says it doesn't sound like Palmer is going to pop up in the City of Brotherly Love.

Might I say first, yes Brittney (to pole dancing) and second? Hmmm? last time I checked, there's no Huntington Beach in Philadelphia. And I'm pretty sure she was definitely at this US Open of Surfing today as evidenced by this patriotic gentleman who posted this picture with Palmer:

Now the question that's weighing heavily on all of us - if the UFC has parted ways with Brittney, will it find a replacement or go with two-woman team for the near future? That's a lot of walking around the cage, smiling and taking photos. The Philly heat is brutal. Let's hope Arianny and Chandella are up to the task.

MMAFix followed up with an update that bright and early this morning Palmer tweeted she's headed to Philadelphia! Woo!

Lady Gaga And Bette Midler: A Real Mermaid Weighs In!

MTV News goes straight to the source to discuss recent pop-culture mermaid trends and beefs.
By Jocelyn Vena

Beyoncé declared her love for mermaids during her MTV special "The Year of 4," while Katy Perry, Lady Gaga and Bette Midler have all dressed up like the mythical sea creatures onstage or in videos. Madonna has surrounded herself with mermen during a past tour, and mermaids also show up in "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides" and in several new novels, including a forthcoming book by "Twilight" author Stephenie Meyer.

Weeki Wachee Springs State Park in Florida is famous for its mermaid shows, so MTV News decided to go right to the source and get a real-deal mermaid on the phone. It's no surprise that "mermaid" Carli Goodworth told us it's officially the Year of the Mermaid.

"It used to be really popular, like, 60 years ago and everybody was all about mermaids, and now today, it's coming back again," Goodworth told MTV News. "The stars are starting to use it, and the people from outside are loving it, and hopefully it'll draw more people to our attraction as well."

So why are pop stars taking on mermaid alter egos? Goodworth said the public persona of mermaids has shifted from the cute and cuddly Disney version to the more accurate version of mermaids who are mysterious, dangerous and sexy.

And the mermaid trend hasn't been free from controversy: There has already been beef between fans of Katy Perry and Lady Gaga, accusing the pop stars of lifting the idea, and then between Lady Gaga and Bette Midler, who did the mermaid-in-a-wheelchair routine decades before Gaga did.

"It's becoming so popular," Goodworth laughed about the mermaid beefs. "I think it's awesome. We're used to the few people around here, because we are known as the mermaid country, and it's neat to see all these other people battling it out to be the only mermaid. It's just different."

Being that Goodworth has performed as a mermaid for quite some time now, she's happy to see other people getting excited about it. "We love mermaids, so it's fun to see other people doing stuff with mermaids besides us," she said, adding her advice: "Be creative, do your own thing, really do your research."

What do you think about the pop-culture mermaid trend? Let us know in the comments!

Justin Bieber, Lady Gaga Support Berry Family After Tragic Accident

Uncle of orphaned, injured Texas children calls outreach 'amazing.'

On July 3, the Berry family suffered an incredible tragedy. Parents Joshua and Robin Berry were killed in a car crash, while brothers Peter, 9, and Aaron, 8, were paralyzed, possibly for life, and remain hospitalized. Their younger sister, Willa, 6, was also injured, but suffered only broken bones. In the weeks since the crash in Texas, celebrities have been doing their part to help raise money for the care of the three young children.

Using the power of social media, everyone from Justin Bieber and Britney Spears to Lady Gaga and Usher have asked their fans to "Show Your Hearts" with donations at showyourhearts.org and via text message (texting BERRY to 85944 donates $10). Their call to arms has meant the world to Matt Berry, the kids' uncle.

"My wife had this family member in the Justin Bieber camp, and when the accident happened ... they reached out to us and asked how they could help," he told MTV News on Thursday. "So, it's been pretty much organic from their reaching out. Right after the accident, he was asking for their names and praying with his mom for the kids. It's not something we expected would happen, obviously.

"So, my understanding is that he wanted to do something to help, and the best way they could help was to create awareness," he continued. "They have a lot of friends and contacts. And then, of course, once their campaigns started going, it looked like a lot of people joined it because I think everyone had some sort of feeling of empathy."

The family is still mending: Peter and Aaron's "lifelong conditions" have been amplified by the loss of their parents; meanwhile Willa is still trying to come to terms with the incident.

Matt Berry said of all the public support they've received has "definitely helped." "Anything that goes to help the kids in their predicament [helps]. I don't know how long it will continue. I'm not someone who likes to be in the public eye, so it's a little bit awkward, but it's amazing.

"It's a little bit overwhelming," he added, but he said that right now, the family is taking it "day by day" as they deal with the aftermath of such a tremendously tragic turn of events.

"If it was up to us, we'd pray that they were able to stand up in a couple of weeks and walk out of the hospital, but the likelihood of that happening is low," he said, adding that the boys are readying for rehab to try to heal in any small way. "There's been a lot of people supporting us, and that's huge. The ultimate dream is if in their lifetime, there's enough momentum to figure something out and fix spinal-cord injuries. We've got two of them that need something special."

Show your support at showyourhearts.org and the Berry Children's Trust Facebook page.

UFC returning to Toronto for UFC 140 on December 10 [UPDATED]

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

MMATorchAvatar2011V2_180_77.jpg
The UFC will be heading back to Canada for UFC 140 on December 10, but the event will not be coming to Montreal as initially reported.

According to a report from Brett Okamoto at ESPN.com, UFC owner Lorenzo Fertitta confirmed that UFC 140 will mark the UFC's second event in Toronto, Ontario, Canada in 2011.

The UFC's biggest event ever from a live gate and attendance standpoint took place in the city in April, when UFC 129 brought 55,000 fans to the Rogers Centre, bringing a gate of nearly $12 million.

However, the UFC won't be attempting to duplicate the success of their first ever stadium event, as this card will take place from the Air Canada Centre, which will be configured for an attendance of around 20,000.

No fights have yet been determined for the event, but it will be the third event the UFC has run in Canada this year.

Penick's Analysis: Canada has proven to be a massive market for the UFC, and the fans in Toronto especially have brought the organization a lot of money through pay-per-view sales and April's event. Though UFC 129 had a lot of travelers making up that 55,000 attendance, much of it was local UFC fans heading out to the Rogers Centre. This is going to be another big event for the UFC in Canada, and it should make for another hot crowd for the UFC.

UPDATE: The UFC has now officially made an announcement of the event, confirming this report with the date, city and venue. Still no word on any fights yet coming to the card, but it's speculated that Toronto natives Sean Pierson and Mark Hominick will take part in the event.

Rashad Evans Crushes Tito Ortiz, Says He Wants to Teach Jon Jones A Lesson

Rashad Evans & Tito OrtizPHILADELPHIA -- More than 14 months removed from his last time in the octagon, Rashad Evans fought with the ferocity of a man with some pent-up aggression. Manhandling the bigger, stronger Tito Ortiz in a way that few men have, Evans brutalized him through the course of almost two complete rounds, finally finishing with a second-round TKO with just 12 seconds left on the clock.

It was a decisive and complete conclusion to a rematch that was more than four years in the making, stemming from their July 7, 2007 bout that ended in a draw. At the time, Evans was a green fighter taking on an established former champion. The bout served as a maturing experience, helping him develop into a champion himself.

The second fight was not nearly as competitive. Ortiz was game, but aside from a guillotine attempt in the second round, he never truly threatened his opponent. Evans had plenty of big moments of his own though, particularly a second-round knee to the body that crumpled Ortiz and led to the finish.

"My body shut down," Ortiz said afterward. "My mind was saying, "Fight, fight fight.' My body was saying, 'No, no, no. What can you do? I tried to defend myself. Rashad was the better fighter tonight." ?

Afterward, Evans reiterated his desire to reclaim the light heavyweight title.

"Whether [Jon Jones] has it or Rampage [Jackson] has it, I'm getting my belt back," he said.

Evans nearly finished Ortiz in the first round after slamming him with a scoop slam and raining down blows from Ortiz's half-guard, but the always durable ex-champ managed to last the round despite a late flurry that had referee Dan Miragliotta closely watching the action.

Ortiz got up after the round quickly, but he came out for the second looking like he'd had something taken out of him. Evans could see it and took full advantage. Evans took him down quickly, but that led to a quick moment of drama as Ortiz latched on to a guillotine. Evans quickly stepped to the side to make sure Ortiz couldn't close his guard and tighten the hold, then escaped a short time later.

"I thought it was close for one-tenth of a second," said Ortiz, who said he made a mistake that allowed Evans to escape.

From there, Ortiz was pinned against the cage, and Evans took advantage of the position by briefly scissoring his arm and dropping punches and elbows from the top. Ortiz tried to buck free and a scramble ended with Ortiz on his knees and Evans standing. From the position, Evans smashed him with a right knee to the body. Ortiz immediately fell over on his side, and Evans followed with hard blows from the top to stop the action.

Ortiz said the knee took the fight out of him.

"I tried to get my body up," he said. "My mind said, 'Get up,' but my body wasn't doing it. The ref said, 'Protect yourself.' I had my hands up, I tried to get up, the heart said, 'Get up,' the mind says, 'Get up,' but the body doesn't react to it."

The win virtually ensured that Evans will fight the winner of UFC 135's title bout between Jackson and Jones, barring any unforeseen development like an injury.

While Evans first said he had no preference of the winner, after defeating Ortiz, he said that he preferred to fight Jones, his former teammate at Team Greg Jackson.

"I would like to the first one to beat him, he's real cocky," Evans said. "I'm on-camera cocky. He's like, go-to-sleep-praising-himself cocky. I would love to teach him a lesson. If he makes it past Rampage then I'll get a chance to do that."

Evans, who also has a rivalry with Jackson, then added that Jackson could come train with him for the fight.

At 16-1-1, Evans has Ortiz behind him. The two embraced before the final decision was read and shared a moment, with Evans thanking him for taking the fight on short notice, and Ortiz telling Evans to go win the title.

Four years after it started, Evans-Ortiz is finally decided, and the reward for the winner is not just bragging rights, but a title opportunity.

Sandro and Curran advance to Bellator 145 tournament final

Marlon Sandro and Pat Curran were favorites entering the night at Bellator 47 and both came away unscathed by using solid boxing to take out their opponents. Sandro and Curran will meet for $100,000 and a world title shot at Bellator 48 in Uncasville, Ct. on Aug. 20.

Sandro, a minus-260 favorite, continued his winning ways in the U.S.. Nazareno Malegarie xhibited a great chin in avoiding a knockout loss, but his boxing just wasn't up to par with Sandro's nasty striking game. The Brazilian rolled over Malegarie via unanimous decision, 30-27 on all three cards.

Sandro (19-2) exploded onto the world scene with three vicious first round knockouts at Sengoku 11, 12 and 13. The 34-year-old was a huge free agent signing for Bellator and immediately tabbed the tourney favorite. He backed it up tonight showing off a complete game. He thwarted every single takedown attempt by Malegarie and forced the Argentinian to stand and bang.

Malegarie (20-2) was no match on the feet. Sandro's head movement made him difficult to hit. The heavy-handed Sandro busted up Malegarie's right eye with an excellent jab. He also pounded Malegarie with left hooks following nasty uppercuts.

Curran (15-4) fought at a measured pace for 15 minutes and Ronnie Mann allowed him to do whatever he wanted. Mann (20-3) is a dangerous boxer, but he was on his horse throughout the first two rounds and did so predictably by constantly circling to his left.

Curran did most of his damage behind some solid jumping knees. The smaller Mann (5-foot-6 vs. 5-10) never found the range. Even after a tongue lashing from his trainer Shawn Tompkins before the third round, Mann failed to step on the gas in the final five minutes. Curran got the nod on the scorecards, 29-28, 30-27 and 30-27.

Bellator's featherweight champ Joe Warren was scheduled to fight on this card, but the bout was canceled when Patricio "Pitbull" Freire had to bow out with a hand injury. Warren also fights down at 135 pounds and is next scheduled to compete in the Bellator bantamweight tourney starting in September. At some point in the future Warren will have to face the Sandro-Curran winner.

Shaunie O'Neal Says She's "Really Embarassed" By The Catfights And Tantrums On "Basketball Wives"

We told you earlier that Shaunie O'Neal had spoken out about the negative direction that the "Basketball Wives" franchise is headed in, and now she's talking to producers of the show about creating more balance.  Get the deets inside...

As we all get ready to watch Eric throw a drink in the face of Jennifer, Shaunie O’Neal opened up to FOX revealing that moments like those are not what she originally envisioned.

“When I started the show I really just wanted to follow this group of ladies around. We all have a common bond; we understand each other’s lives. It started as that. Since then, it’s taken on a life of its own,” O’Neal told FOX411’s Pop Tarts column. “I never imagined it would be a group of ladies fighting and arguing that way that they do. That was never part of the plan.”

She continued,

I hate that it has to be a fight or an argument that gives us 4.2 million viewers. I hate that, but it’s something where I’m working as hard as I can to show some type of balance, because it is there. We do know how to act, we do charity work. I would love a little more balance and we’re going to try to do more of that in season 4,” she said. “I know that people love the fighting and the arguing, but I do want to have some positive in there somewhere.”

But it doesn't seem like we will be getting many positive moments from "BBW: LA" when it debuts in August.  Shaunie seems to be taking a negative stance towards those chicks.

“I feel like that show, from what I hear in certain production calls and stuff like that, is turning into ‘I have slept with a basketball player at some point of time in my life, so now I’m on Basketball Wives’. That’s definitely not what I brought to the table and not what I would be proud of having my name on. I think that’s a whole different show that I wouldn’t produce.”

We hear Shaunie's frustrations....but.....she's still cashing those "BBW"  "BBW: LA" checks. So can you have it both ways?

She ended her interview saying, “A change needs to be made somewhere in these reality shows."  And she said this could be done by "...showing some balances.”

Henry Cavill Superman Photo in 'Man of Steel'

Henry Cavill Superman Photo in 'Man of Steel'

Sure, Superman is "faster than a speeding bullet, more powerful than a locomotive and able to leap tall buildings in a single bound" -- but did you know that, in director Zack Snyder's upcoming Man of Steel, he's British?

OK, so Superman won't technically be British (no breaks from crime-fighting for afternoon tea at the Ritz), but he will be played by an Englishman: 28-year-old Henry Cavill. And, while we can't vouch for the authenticity of Cavill's American accent just yet, the first photo of the erstwhile Tudors star donning Supes' signature blue tights and red cape should vanquish fans' fears that he won't at least look the part. Check it out above!

The suit is dark blue and the cape a rich red, and both look to be made out of a thick, sturdy material. That, combined with Cavill's defiant stare and imposing build (yeah, the guy may be working out a bit), lends his Superman a dark, confident air. And then there's that iconic "S" insignia on Cavill's chest: It's nice and big and bold -- basically the perfect way to say, "Hey, bad guys, you know who I am. Now's probably a good time to soil your shorts."

All in all, we'd have to say that this photo announces the new Man of Steel's presence with authority. But it also whets the appetite for more, so fingers crossed a first glimpse of Russell Crowe as Supes' Kryptonian dad Jor-El isn't far behind. That'd be just super.

Man of Steel -- which also stars Amy Adams as Lois Lane, Kevin Costner and Diane Lane as Jonathan and Martha Kent, and Michael Shannon as the villainous General Zod -- flies into theaters June 14, 2013.
